RTDNA Canada announces 2020 national and network award winners


TORONTO — RTDNA Canada announced Tuesday the winners of the 2020 RTDNA Canada National and Network Awards, which honour the country’s best journalists, programs, stations and newsgathering organizations in radio, television and digital.

Among the national winners in the radio category are: CBC Montreal for breaking news; CBC Toronto and CBC Saskatchewan for best short feature in large and small/medium market, respectively; CBC Manitoba and Saskatchewan’s 650 CKOM for best radio newscast in large and small/medium market, respectively; and CBC Vancouver for continuing coverage, excellence in sound, best long feature (large market), and news—live special events. CBC stations in Calgary, Edmonton, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador were also national winners in other radio categories. In addition, Adam Stirling of Bell Media’s CFAX 1070 AM in Victoria, B.C., received the Sam Ross Award for opinion and commentary.

In the television category, some of the national winners are: CTV Vancouver for breaking news and best TV newscast (large market); Global Calgary for continuing coverage; Global News Toronto for best long feature (large market); Global Regina for best TV news information program; CTV News Ottawa and CTV Vancouver Island for best short feature in large and small/medium market, respectively; CTV London for best TV newscast (small/medium market); and Medicine Hat’s Chat TV for best long feature (small/medium market). CBC stations in Edmonton, Manitoba, Ottawa, and Newfoundland and Labrador also won national awards in other TV categories.

In the separate Network Awards, CBC swept almost all of the radio categories, with the exception of the best short feature award, which was won by The Canadian Press.

In the Network Awards for television, CBC News won for breaking news, diversity, excellence in video, best long feature, news—live special events, best short feature and best TV newscast. CTV News won in the television categories of continuing coverage and opinion and commentary. CTV’s W5 program also received an honourable mention in the excellence in video category. In addition, Bell Media’s TSN won awards for best sports feature reporting and sports—live special events. Global National won the award for best TV news information program.

Regional award winners and lifetime achievement award recipients, such as Global Television’s Sean O’Shea, were also announced in virtual presentations.
