Roku announces first Roku Original film

SAN JOSE, Calif. and TORONTO — Roku and Lionsgate announced today a new feature-length holiday movie based on the series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will debut on The Roku Channel later this year.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas marks the first Roku Original film announced for The Roku Channel. Production on the project will start in Vancouver this month, says a press release.

The TV series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist debuted in 2020 on NBC, but has since been cancelled.

“After its run on NBC, the series and talent received immense support on socials through #savezoeysplaylist to continue the story, underscoring the show’s loyal fan base,” the press release says.

“The fans were passionate and unwavering in their support, and their perseverance paid off. There’s no better encore than a Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist movie on Roku available to stream for the holidays,” said Lionsgate executive vice-president of television and head of development Scott Herbst and Lionsgate executive vice-president of television and head of current programming Lee Hollin, in the release.

“We’re proud to partner with The Roku Channel in bringing compelling, original programming to their fast-growing and engaged audiences. Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas is a continuation of our beloved story and Roku is the perfect home for it.”

The movie picks up where season two of the series left off, “continuing Zoey’s journey as she navigates work, family, love, and everything in between,” the release reads.

The project brings back the original cast, including Jane Levy (above, right), Skylar Astin (left), Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Gallagher and Bernadette Peters.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas is produced by Lionsgate in association with the Tannenbaum Company, Feigco Entertainment and Universal Music Group’s Polygram Entertainment and Zihuatenejo Productions.

The movie will air for free on The Roku Channel in Canada this holiday season. In addition, all 25 episodes of the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist series will be available to stream for free on The Roku Channel later this fall, according to an email from a Roku spokesperson.
