Rogers Yahoo! launches portable Internet

TORONTO – Rogers Cable is launching the Rogers Yahoo! portable Internet service for wireless access in 20 cities across Canada.

The service is plug and play, requiring a specially designed modem to be connected to a computer and a power source. It uses wireless technology to transmit signals to and from the special modem, without phone or cable lines.

It offers download speeds of up to 1.5 mbps, and upload speeds of 256 kbps, which is up to 25 times faster than dial-up Internet service, Rogers says.

It uses a non line-of-sight wireless broadband network currently available in Greater Vancouver Area, Victoria, Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton, Whitehorse, Greater Toronto Area, Barrie, London, Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Ottawa, Gatineau-Hull, Quebec City, Greater Montreal Area, Charlottetown, Halifax, Fredericton, and St. John’s, with more markets to follow.

The service is available for $49.95 a month plus modem purchase at $99.95 and a one-year commitment. As a special introductory offer, customers will pay $44.95 a month for 12 months, plus receive free activation.

Customers will get the same features as the cable version of Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet, including advanced email anti-virus software, PC anti-virus protection, parental controls, pop-up blocker and spam control, and online music and photo services.

"Today there are many options for people looking to get online, and it can be a little overwhelming for them to make the right choice for their business or personal needs,” said Terry Canning, Vice President and General Manager of Internet Service, Rogers. "The growth in laptop sales points to the ever increasing importance companies and workers are placing on portability, and Portable Internet from Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet specifically addresses this need by providing a fast, secure, and easy to set-up Internet connection, that travels with people when they leave their home or office.”
