Rogers unveils pay-per-use rate for U.S. wireless roaming

TORONTO – Rogers announced today a new “worry-free” wireless roaming internet rate for customers travelling to the United States.

At $7.99 per day, the new plan lets customers access 50 MB of data while in the U.S. through their smartphones or tablets. That’s enough data to view approximately 1,000 emails, 5,000-plus tweets, 50 maps, or 200 web pages a day.

“Our customers can now have the confidence and peace of mind to use their smartphones and tablets in the U.S. to access the internet, just as they would at home,” said Rogers’ senior vice-president of products, Raj Doshi, in a release. “This new approach to roaming is simple and easy, and provides our customers with more cost certainty while using wireless data throughout the U.S."

A national survey commissioned by Rogers with Head Research last month shows that the majority of Canadians (60%) travelling to the U.S. have felt disconnected or out of touch without a data plan on their smartphone.

The survey also compiled Canadians’ favourite ways to stay connected while on vacation. They include:

  • using maps (71%)
  • looking up restaurants and local activities (61%)
  • checking the weather (57%)
  • reviewing travel or flight status on their device (58%)
  • emailing others about their trip (63%)
  • sending regular updates on Facebook (58%)
  • posting photos on Instagram (71%)
  • checking on pets back at home via email: (73% of respondents who were pet owners)
