Rogers Telecom to help CANARIE fly

OTTAWA – Rogers Telecom and CANARIE, Canada’s research and education network organization today announced a multi-million dollar contract whereby Rogers Telecom will provide a wide range of network services to support the CA*net 4 network.

The network services will enable CANARIE to continue to expand CA*net 4 connections beyond virtually all of the country’s universities and colleges now served, to federal and provincial research labs, schools, hospitals and private sector research facilities.

CANARIE is a not-for-profit advanced Internet organization funded by Industry Canada to facilitate the development and use of next-generation research networks and the applications and services that run on them. CANARIE promotes collaboration and partners with innovators around the world in order to try and stimulate innovation and growth – and help deliver social, cultural, and economic benefits to Canadians. CA*net 4, Canada’s national research and innovation network, is developed and operated by CANARIE.

"Today’s research is dependent upon advanced networks, not only for the massive amounts of data collected but for sharing that data across great distances within Canada as well as around the globe," said Andrew Bjerring, president and CEO of CANARIE, in the press release. "We are pleased to partner with Rogers Telecom to keep Canada at the leading edge of advanced networks and networked research."

Rogers Telecom (the division of Rogers Communications that was Sprint Canada) will provide a variety of super-high-speed local access services that will allow Canada’s leading innovators to take advantage of the capabilities of the extensive bandwidth of CA*net 4. In addition to building local access facilities, the contract also provides for the construction of new fibre facilities to several sites and the long-term lease and maintenance of various network elements.

"This is an extraordinary opportunity for our business to continue to contribute to CANARIE’s mission," said Nadir Mohamed, president and COO, of Rogers’ communications division (cable and telecom). "We view the business market as a growth opportunity for our company and are committed to continuing to bring innovative voice, wireless, data and Internet solutions to enterprises of all sizes including multi-national companies."
