Rogers starts construction in Oxford County

OXFORD COUNTY, Ont. – Rogers Communications started construction on a project to bring high-speed Internet to 484 homes, farms and businesses in the communities of Drumbo and Gobles in Oxford County by April 2022, Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced today.

This broadband project, previously announced in October 2020, is valued at $1.5 million and is being funded in part by the Governments of Canada and Ontario, which have committed up to $349,000 each. The contracts were awarded to Rogers by SWIFT.

The “project will service 15 kilometres of roadway with fibre-optic cabling to provide more homes and businesses within the communities of Drumbo and Gobles, as well as the area along Oxford Road 3 between Drumbo and Princeton with access to high-speed internet,” says a SWIFT press release.

“We’re proud to partner with Rogers Communications in our efforts to further expand broadband service in Oxford County,” said Barry Field, executive director of SWIFT, in the release.

“With the construction of the fibre-optic network now underway many more residents living in the communities of Drumbo and Gobles will soon benefit from having access to fast, reliable internet connectivity that will offer greater opportunities to connect, engage in online learning and work remotely.”

This project is part of the Ontario government’s plan to connect every community in the province to high-speed Internet by the end of 2025 and “will help ensure that farms and businesses will have the ability to attract new customers, grow their business, create new jobs and stay competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace,” a press release from the Ontario government says.

“It will also help people connect with family, friends and their communities in easier and faster ways than before.”
