Rogers signs LTE roaming agreement with Swisscom; launches new high-speed modem

TORONTO – Rogers announced Friday it has signed an agreement with Switzerland telecommunications company Swisscom AG to deliver bilateral 2600 MHz LTE roaming service to customers of both mobile service providers.

That means Rogers and Swisscom customers can access the LTE wireless internet network while roaming with a 2600 MHz device when they are travelling in either Canada or Switzerland. With the Swisscom launch, Rogers says it is the first Canadian carrier to bring LTE roaming to Europe.

“This launch is part of an ongoing commitment to bring the LTE experience to all of our travelling customers, no matter where in the world they choose to go,” said Raj Doshi, SVP of products at Rogers Communications, in a release.

Rogers also signed international LTE roaming agreements with Hong Kong and South Korea earlier this year, and plans to launch LTE roaming in other countries in 2013.  Here at home, the telco has also been making its 2600 MHz LTE spectrum band available in all Rogers markets.

Rogers also announced today the launch of its new advanced Wi-Fi modem, the company’s furthest reaching modem for Wi-Fi internet coverage in the home.

Rogers says it is the first carrier in the world to launch the 24 x 8 DOCSIS Wi-Fi modem, which is made by Hitron Technologies Americas. The new modem communicates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi frequency bands, utilizing high-powered radios to produce a better range and higher speeds.

According to research conducted by Allion USA, an international engineering validation and consulting company, determined that the new Wi-Fi modem is capable of delivering peak Wi-Fi speeds of up to 420 Mbps.

The Advanced Wi-Fi Modem is available for a rental fee of $12 per month on all Rogers Hi-Speed Internet packages. Plans start at $44.49 per month.
