Rogers scales back on 4K NHL content

TORONTO – Despite last year’s big 4K investment spend under now ousted president and CEO Guy Laurence, Rogers will offer fewer 4K NHL games this season than it did last year.

The communications giant said Wednesday that all 81 regular season Blue Jays home games will be produced and broadcast by Sportsnet in 4K, as will 14 Toronto Raptors games between January and April, 2017.  But it committed to only seven Toronto Maple Leafs matchups in the latter half of the 2016-17 NHL season, in addition to the eight between October and December,  which is at least five NHL games less than last season.

Last year’s announcement also trumpeted the arrival of more than 100 hours of 4K movies, series and TV shows earmarked for now defunct streaming service shomi.  But Rogers’ only 4K content at the moment is sports.

Rogers also announced the arrival of its new NextBox 4K PVR that will allow customers to record up to eight 4K programs at one time and store up to 90 hours of 4K content, plus pledged to invest in its TV platform to improve stability, upgrade its mobile apps, and enhance Nextbox.
