TORONTO – Ted Rogers’ Muskoka cottage took centre stage today at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
His place on Lake Rosseau, about two hours north of Toronto, was tied into the conference using a WiMax-enabled Internet feed. WiMax allows users to wirelessly access broadband Internet. The WiMax connection was established using Redline Communications’ RedMAX equipment, which incorporates the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 WiMax modem silicon.
The developer forum is a gathering of over 4,000 technology professionals representing 1,400 companies. The WiMax presentation was led by Sean Maloney, executive vice-president and general manager of Intel Corporation’s Mobility Group.
"Wireless broadband is the next phase of high-speed Internet access," said David Robinson, vice-president, business implementation, Rogers Communications Inc. "It will allow Rogers to offer access in underserved parts of the country, both in and out of Rogers Cable areas. Just as importantly, it will provide our customers with high-speed Internet portability. "
Also part of the demonstration was an Intel factory in China, a cargo ship in the Netherlands, and a school in Argentina. These locations, along with Rogers’ cottage, combined to show the ability of WiMax to facilitate digital cities, support large commercial operations, enable education and help bridge the digital divide.
Redline’s WiMax products are designed to operate in a wide range of network designs and deployments, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint, in urban and rural geographies. The RedMAX base station (AN-100U) can transmit a variety of services, including video and voice over IP and prioritized data traffic to the RedMAX indoor and outdoor subscriber units.
Redline conducted the world’s first live ‘over-the-air’ demonstration of indoor and outdoor IEEE 802.16 2004-compliant networking equipment (upon which WiMax is based) at several telecommunications industry events including SUPERCOMM2005 in Chicago and at WCA2005 in Washington. RedMAX products are currently undergoing certification testing at the Cetecom labs in Malaga, Spain.
A replay of the presentation will be available on www.intel.com/idf/us/fall2005/webcast.htm.
