Rogers’ Innes wins SCTE young engineer award

EXTON, Pa. and TORONTO – Brent Innes of Rogers Communications is this year’s winner of the SCTE Young Canadian Engineering Professional of the Year Award, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) proudly announced today.

The Young Canadian Engineering Professional of the Year Award is made possible through the sponsorship of Aurora Networks and the efforts of Cartt.ca and SCTE. Innes will receive his award at SCTE Canadian Summit 2011, which is set for Tuesday through Wednesday, March 8-9 at the Toronto Congress Centre in Toronto.

Innes, 30, of Bolton, Ontario, and an SCTE member since January 2010, is a senior network planner with Rogers. The third annual award honours outstanding technical achievements and contributions made to the advancement of the cable telecommunications industry by a young Canadian engineering professional who is under the age of 35.

“Through professionalism, hard work, and dedication to his profession, Brent has shown himself to be a leader and model young Canadian engineer,” said Fujitsu Network Communications senior account manager John Steele, who nominated Innes for the award. “Brent is considered to be a huge asset by his management, peers, and customers and is, therefore, deserving of this award.”

Innes, who graduated with honours in computer engineering from Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario), has been pivotal in securing numerous business contracts at Rogers. His in-depth knowledge of the MSO field and skill in engineering make him a key member of the Rogers’ planning team. Innes has been instrumental in the design of some of Rogers’ largest and most strategic customer networks. These include a national broadcast network for the CBC/Radio-Canada, which incorporated more than 50 sites and more than 60 circuits.

“Brent has demonstrated he is capable of taking the leadership role in the complex design of some of the largest enterprise networks being built in Canada today,” said Steele, “all while showing the dedication to develop himself personally through acquiring his PEng (Professional Engineer credential) with the Professional Engineers of Ontario.”

For garnering SCTE’s Young Canadian Engineering Professional of the Year Award, Innes receives a complimentary registration to SCTE Canadian Summit 2011 and complimentary hotel accommodations.

At the Summit, now in its third year, engineering professionals from across the industry and multiple countries will convene to explore the impacts of integrating new technologies into existing cable infrastructures and to delve into next-generation architectures.

The Summit will tackle critical topics like IPTV, DOCSIS 3.0, and FTTH. It will feature hands-on exhibits, informative technical breakout sessions, the SCTE Technology Challenge, and timely networking opportunities. SCTE is proud to present Tony Werner of Comcast as the event’s keynote speaker, sponsored by Huawei Technologies Canada.
