Telus achieves lowest network latency
SEATTLE — As was the case in the previous quarter, Rogers Communications ranked as the fastest fixed broadband provider among top Canadian providers in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Seattle-based Ookla’s latest Speedtest Global Index measurement of network speeds in Canada.
Based on Speedtest Intelligence data from October to December 2020, Ookla awarded Rogers a fixed-broadband speed score of 147.12. Close behind was Canada’s other big cable company Shaw Communications with a speed score of 146.96, followed by Telus (105.9), Bell Canada (103.62), Cogeco (98.27), Videotron (94.65) and TekSavvy (39.36).
Ookla’s speed score incorporates measurements of each provider’s download and upload speeds to rank network speed performance, with 90% of the final speed score being attributed to download speed.
When it comes to latency, in Q4 2020, Telus came out on top with the lowest mean latency at 13 milliseconds (ms) compared to the other top fixed broadband providers in Canada. The other providers ranked as follows: Bell Canada (14 ms), Shaw (15 ms), Rogers (16 ms), Videotron (18 ms), Cogeco (18 ms) and TekSavvy (25 ms).
In measuring the consistency of each fixed broadband provider’s performance, Ookla found Rogers had the highest consistency score in Canada during the fourth quarter of 2020, with 88.7% of its results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed. Consistency scores for the other providers were as follows: Shaw (86%), Cogeco (83.7%), Videotron (82.5%), Telus (80.1%), Bell Canada (75.9%) and TekSavvy (62%).
Looking region by region, Rogers achieved the highest fixed-broadband speed score in New Brunswick and Ontario. Shaw was the fastest fixed broadband provider in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, while Bell was the fastest provider in Quebec, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Interestingly, Edmonton showed the fastest mean download speed (187.74 Mbps) over fixed broadband among Canada’s most populous cities during Q4 2020. The other top 10 cities in terms of mean download speeds were Calgary (182.87 Mbps), London (171.38 Mbps), Toronto (170.52 Mbps), Vancouver (169.15 Mbps), Halifax (161.09 Mbps), Ottawa (158.97 Mbps), Winnipeg (154.36 Mbps), Quebec City (149.76 Mbps) and Montreal (108.79 Mbps).
