Rogers Communications announced Tuesday it has started to deploy Ericsson 5G Advanced technology on its national network, calling it “a first for a Canadian operator.”
“5G Advanced will help unlock the full potential of 5G for businesses and consumers,” Mark Kennedy, chief technology officer of Rogers, said in a press release. “We continue to invest in Canada’s largest 5G network and are proud to be the first in Canada to bring 5G Advanced technology to our customers.”
Rogers said it is rolling out Ericsson’s 5G Advanced RedCap software to power next-generation Internet of Things (IoT). “With RedCap, IoT devices, such as sensors, cameras and monitoring equipment, use network resources more efficiently and connect seamlessly. For consumers, the technology supports longer battery life for wearables, including smartwatches,” Rogers’s press release said.
“Ericsson is proud to partner with Rogers to bring the latest network technologies to Canadians,” said Jeanette Irekvist, president of Ericsson Canada, in a statement. “The deployment of Ericsson 5G Advanced features marks another exciting chapter in our collaboration and together we will enable differentiated connectivity and deliver high-performing programmable networks that will ensure Canadian consumers and businesses are among the first to access the newest global technologies.”
Ericsson has long been a network technology partner of Rogers, who initially launched wireless services in Canada in 1985. Over the last decade, Rogers has invested more than $40 billion in its networks, it said.
“The company continues to invest to expand the country’s largest and most reliable 5G network, which now reaches more than 2,500 communities,” Rogers said.
