NORFOLK COUNTY, Ont. — Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced today Rogers Communications has completed construction of a 70-kilometre fibre-to-the-home network bringing high-speed Internet access to 2,116 homes and businesses in Norfolk County, located southwest of Hamilton.
The Ontario communities covered by the network project include Wilsonville, Boston, Bealton, Dundurn, Waterford, Townsend Centre, Villa Nova and Bloomsburg, according to SWIFT’s press release.
SWIFT awarded the contract to Rogers in January 2020 and the telecom started construction that July.
According to SWIFT’s approved projects webpage, the network project was originally expected to be completed in August 2021.
The overall cost for the broadband infrastructure network was $7.67 million, with the federal and provincial governments each committing up to $1.44 million in funding through the SWIFT program, according to an Ontario government press release.
“SWIFT is pleased to be working with Rogers Communications to further expand and improve high-speed broadband service throughout Norfolk County to ensure that many more resident and business owners are provided with access to high-quality internet connectivity,” said SWIFT executive director Barry Field, in SWIFT’s press release.
“Today’s announcement is yet another major milestone for the SWIFT program as it brings our region one step closer to a more connected Southwestern Ontario,” Field said.
“In partnership with SWIFT, we are thrilled that residents in Norfolk County will have access to Rogers Ignite services including Internet and Ignite TV,” said Philippe Oille, president of the Southwestern Ontario region for Rogers Communications.
“Our teams have worked hard to deliver dependable connectivity in the community at a time when staying connected to what matters most makes all the difference. We continue to work towards ensuring the county’s businesses and municipal offices benefit from that same connectivity.”
