Rogers carries over Sportsnet brand to radio

TORONTO – Rogers has attached its Sportsnet television brand to its sports radio stations in Toronto and Calgary.  Effective immediately, the former FAN stations will be known as Sportsnet Radio FAN 590 and Sportsnet Radio FAN 960, respectively.

“We’re excited to bring the strength of these two brands together,” said newly minted Rogers Broadcasting president Scott Moore, in a statement on Wednesday.  “Both the FAN and Sportsnet resonate with passionate local fans. Our fans want to talk about and interact with their local teams. We offer the best place to do that.”

The move comes amidst industry rumours that rival CTV will soon change the format of its Toronto-based AM station CP24 Radio 1050 (formerly 1050 CHUM) to TSN or ESPN Radio.

Rogers Sportsnet consists of four regional sports TV channels plus the nationally distributed Sportsnet One.  Sportsnet Radio FAN 590 in Toronto is home of Canada’s most listened to radio sports personality, Bob McCown, host of the #1 Sports Talk Show for the past 20 years (which is also simulcast and replayed on Rogers Sportsnet).  Sportsnet Radio FAN 960 in Calgary features morning man Mike Richards, affectionately known as the Prime Minister of the Politically Incorrect.
