LONDON, U.K. — In its latest comparison of the 5G experience across Canada’s three national carriers, U.K.-based mobile analytics company Opensignal finds Rogers Communications remains ahead of competitors Bell and Telus in overall 5G experience.
According to its 5G Mobile Experience Awards included in its Canada 5G Experience Report, February 2022 (please see chart above), Rogers is the outright winner of Opensignal’s awards for 5G availability, 5G games experience and 5G upload speed. Rogers is also a joint winner with Bell for the 5G reach award, and a joint winner with Telus for 5G voice app experience.
The remaining two award categories, 5G video experience and 5G download speed, were jointly won by Bell and Telus, according to Opensignal’s report.
The report uses data collected from Opensignal users on the three national mobile carriers between Oct. 1 and Dec. 29, 2021.
Looking deeper into how the Big Three telecoms performed, Rogers achieved a score of 11.1% in terms of 5G availability, followed closely by Bell at 10.1% and Telus at 9.7%.
For 5G games experience, Rogers scored 81.8 points out of 100, compared to Telus’s score of 80 points and Bell’s score of 78 points. This places all three mobile operators in the Good (75<85) category for 5G games experience.
In the other category where Rogers was a sole winner, Rogers achieved an average 5G upload speed of 20.8 Mbps during the period covered by the report. Telus and Bell saw average 5G upload speeds of 19.1 Mbps and 17.9 Mbps, respectively, during the same time period.
In terms of 5G reach, Opensignal says Rogers and Bell had statistically tied scores and were considered joint winners in this category. However, the points awarded to the three big carriers were 4.8 for Rogers, 4.4 for Bell and 4.4 for Telus, so we are not sure at Cartt.ca why the three were not all considered to be joint winners. (Opensignal has not yet responded to a request for clarification on this.)
For 5G voice app experience, Rogers and Telus jointly won the award with scores of 82.1 points and 81.7 points, respectively. Bell scored 80.3 points in this category.
Looking at 5G video experience, Telus and Bell scored 80.6 points and 79.7 points, respectively, putting them both in the Excellent (75 points or above) category. Rogers placed in the Very Good (65<75) category with 72.6 points.
Finally, in terms of 5G download speeds, Telus and Bell “dominate Canada” in this category, according to Opensignal’s report. With respective average 5G download speeds of 156.1 Mbps and 152.9 Mbps, Telus and Bell maintain a substantial lead over Rogers, which achieved an average 5G download speed of 90.7 Mbps during the time period covered by the report.
Mobile network experience when including 4G
Opensignal also released today its Canada Mobile Network Experience Report, February 2022, which includes analysis for 4G network experience as well as 5G.
Looking again at user data for the period from Oct. 1 to Dec. 29, 2021, Opensignal finds “Telus remains the dominant operator in Canada when it comes to overall mobile network experience across all technologies,” according to the report.
Out of the seven awards in the report (please see chart below), Telus is the outright winner in four categories (video experience, games experience, voice app experience and upload speed experience) and a joint winner in two more categories (download speed experience and 4G coverage experience, both jointly won with Bell).
The seventh category, 4G availability, was jointly won by Bell and Rogers. It’s worth noting all three operators’ 4G availability scores exceeded 93%, and their scores were very close, although Opensignal awarded this category to Bell and Rogers.
