SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Research In Motion unveiled a new, next-generation operating system called BlackBerry BBX, one of many announcements made Tuesday at its software developers’ conference known as DevCon.
BBX combines the best of BlackBerry and the best of QNX and is designed from the ground up to enable powerful real-time mobile experiences, the company said. It also made public new developer tools to help mobile software programmers create new apps for the BBX platform, including WebWorks for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, the Native SDK for its PlayBook tablet, and a developer beta of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 with support for running Android applications.
"At DevCon today, we're giving developers the tools they need to build richer applications and we're providing direction on how to best develop their smartphone and tablet apps as the BlackBerry and QNX platforms converge into our next generation BBX platform", said co-CEO and president, Mike Lazaridis, in the announcement.
