Richard Stursberg returns

GATINEAU – Seems as though Telus has a thing for former Canadian Cable Television Association presidents…

Former CBC executive vice-president Richard Stursberg made his first official industry appearance since he was let go by the Corp in the summer Wednesday in Gatineau.

He was appearing for Telus as an expert consultant during the big carrier’s appearance in front of the CRTC during day two of its hearing into the acquisition of CTV by BCE.

(Stursberg was president of the now defunct CCTA in the late 1990s and Telus’ SVP regulatory and government affairs, Michael Hennessy was the final CCTA president. The company also employed another former CCTA president, Janet Yale, as EVP corporate affairs from 2003-’09)

Stursberg understandably did not want to talk about his dismissal from the CBC in August but told Cartt.ca he took a number of months off travelling and chatting and was pleased to be back working in the industry.

“Telus is in a unique situation in that they are the only really big carrier in the country without any content assets,” he said, adding he will also be helping the company prepare for its CRTC submissions and presentation to the vertical integration hearing in June.

“There are gigantic structural shifts in the industry, so they asked me if I would just come and consult to them on what to do, to give them a hand in thinking through what they do about media and entertainment and content.”
