Research pitches Blue Jays as Canada’s favourite team

TORONTO – With the Toronto Blue Jays gearing up for post-season play, new research from Charlton Strategic Research says the team is tops among Canadian sports fans.

While statistically tied with the Montreal Canadiens as Canada’s most popular pro sports team, the Jays ranked first overall out of 21 teams from the NHL, CFL, NBA and MLS by having more “Big” or the most passionate fans.  The results come from an online poll conducted mid-September as part of Charlton’s monthly representative national tracking among 500 Canadian sports fans aged 12-70 years.

Other highlights from the research include:

– Nationally, the Toronto Blue Jays have the strongest “Big Fan” base of all of the Toronto teams.  This is driven by a strong Jays following in Ontario and across the country, particularly in the Prairies and also in BC and Quebec.

– Among “Big Fans”, evidence shows that the Toronto Blue Jays are attracting new fans in the 12-34 year old age group.  As fans in their twenties have little or no recollection of Blue Jay championships in 1992 and 1993, they are fans of today’s Blue Jays team.

– As well, the Blue Jays show the highest incidence of “Big Fans” among all of the key demographic breaks including: 12-17 year olds (teens), 18-34 year olds (millennials) and 35-49 year old fans.
