RCMP seize equipment allegedly used in TV signal piracy at 64-year-old’s home


SHERBROOKE, QC – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced Tuesday they had seized equipment believed to be used in satellite TV signal theft in a 64-year-old man’s home in Austin, Bedford Township.

The RCMP confiscated 20 receivers, 50 Bell smart cards, equipment that could be used to steal satellite TV signals and computers containing information on satellite TV signal piracy in the search last Thursday of the home.

The Austin resident was arrested and questioned by the police officers. He could be summoned to appear in court on charges of theft of satellite signals, possession of equipment used to intercept satellite signals and distribution of pirated items used to fraudulently intercept satellite signals under the Radiocommunication Act.

The Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, Industry Canada and Bell Express Vu helped with the case.

The investigation was conducted by police officers of the RCMP Federal Investigation Section. This section is responsible for investigating cases of fraud against the federal government and for enforcing federal statutes, including the Weights and Measures Act, the Copyright Act, the Trademarks Act, and the Radiocommunication Act.
