Rae and Montgomery take CCMA award

EDMONTON – CFCW’s Jackie Rae and the late Wes Montgomery (right) were named On-Air Personality of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association last weekend.

Rae was on hand in Calgary to except the award “and brought the full auditorium to tears with her heartfelt speech that thanked the legendary Edmonton broadcaster, Wes Montgomery, for everything he contributed to Alberta Radio, the world of curling, and for how he was not only a great mentor but also a best friend,” says the station. She also noted “I know this trophy will find a very special place in the Montgomery family home.”

Montgomery spent 47 years as a broadcaster beginning in Peace River in 1958 at CKYL. After short stints in Saskatoon and Lloydminster, he landed a job at CHED in Edmonton and basically never left. He was a popular morning man at CHED, K-LITE, CISN, CFRN and finally the last 12 years at CFCW. Montgomery was one of Edmonton’s most enduring and loved personalities. He died in April of this year

The CFCW morning show is now hosted by double (two years in a row) CCMA On Air Personality of the Year Jackie Rae and her new co-host as of June 6th, 2005, Graham Neil.

CFCW 790 began broadcasting from a small studio in Camrose in 1954, becoming the first station in Canada to play country music 24 hours a day. During these five decades CFCW has grown to have full-time studios in both Camrose and Edmonton and become the most listened to country music station in the province.
