Radio One, in pod form

TORONTO – Canadians can now listen to CBC Radio’s programming on demand as podcasts.

The public broadcaster is making a rather large number of its programs available for complimentary download or subscription, including “best of” editions from The Current, Dispatches, Definitely Not The Opera, Ideas, Outfront, As It Happens plus comprehensive highlight packages of regionally-based radio programs.

According to a recent CBC survey, one-third of podcast users listen to more than three hours of podcasts per week at home, work or in transit. The top reason for listening to podcasts is to hear the program anytime.

“Canadians have the technology and the appetite to listen to public radio programming on their own time,” said Bob Kerr, director of digital programming and business development, in the press release. “Our survey shows that six out of 10 podcasters say evenings are the most convenient time of day to listen. We’re offering listeners the flexibility to hear their favourite CBC Radio programs whenever they want.”

Two of CBC Radio’s current podcasts – Quirks And Quarks and CBC Radio 3 – are consistently among the top podcasts in Canada. Building on that success, CBC Radio is providing listeners with the programs they love by subscription or download.

“The popularity of podcasts is growing since the technology’s inception less than two years ago,” says Tod Maffin, podcaster and contributing producer to CBC Radio One. “CBC Radio One is delivering what public radio fans are looking for – more content-rich programming on their podcasts.”

With 22 podcasts, CBC Radio will now deliver the “best of” some of its most popular national and regional programs from across the country. A complete schedule can be seen at www.cbc.ca/podcasting.
