Radio news reports come too close to “edge of a crumbling terminological cliff”, says CBSC

OTTAWA – The erroneous use of the term “scab worker” in a news report is “problematic”, says the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC).The Council reviewed news reports that aired on CFMJ (AM640, Toronto) on June 24, 2009 about an elevator accident that had occurred that morning at an office building in downtown Toronto, which resulted in the death of an elevator maintenance worker.  A listener complained that the report had suggested the man might be a “scab” worker when that was not in fact the case.Multiple reports broadcast during the day informed listeners about the accident and the on-going situation at...
