The Quebecor Fund board of directors announced Wednesday that it selected two projects for its Film Production Assistance Program, submissions to which closed in January.
The $390,000 grant will be shared between two productions: Furies and Ma belle-mère est une sorcière.
Furies is “Quebec’s first comedy about women’s sports” centring on a “group of women led by a feisty octogenarian” who form a roller derby team after losing their ice time at the local rink. The film’s screenplay is written by Gabrielle Cote and directed by Melanie Charbonneau and will be produced by Echo Media Inc. and distributed by Immina Films
Ma belle-mère est une sorcière features Margot who, after her parents separate, seeks to remove a stranger who has moved into the house and appears to have cast a spell on her father. The film will be produced by Attraction La Fête Productions inc. and distributed by TVA Films.
The Quebecor Fund also said Wednesday that it is investing $627,000 and the Canada Media Fund (CMF) is putting $523,000 into companies that work to export and advertise productions to international and non-Quebec markets. Companies getting a share of the $1.15 million are Pixcom International Inc., Cyril Chauquet Inc., Productions Connect3 Inc., and Yzanakio.
Since its launch in March 2014, the non-profit Quebecor Fund says it has invested more than $12.9 million in 64 export business models with 37 partner companies, while the CMF, which joined the Quebecor Fund in 2017, has plowed nearly $5.4 million.
In total, the fund says it has paid out a total of nearly $141.7 million to support content on multiple platforms.
