CHICOUTIMI – Over the past few weeks, members of the RCMP Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Detachment seized some forty devices used to intercept satellite television signals, the detachment announced today.
Charges could be laid against four suspects for theft of satellite signals as well as possession and sale of equipment used to fraudulently intercept satellite signals, says a press release.
The devices were found in the residences of the alleged offenders. The investigators conducted three searches: two in the city of Saguenay and one in Montreal. Two of the suspects reside in the city of Saguenay, whereas the other two, who are originally from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, reside in Montréal.
It’s believed the suspects used an Internet site and the classifieds in local newspapers to sell the devices and one of the suspects could be charged with theft of satellite signals and possession of device to obtain telecommunication facility or service under the Criminal Code of Canada.
The other three could face charges of possession and sale of device to obtain telecommunication facility or service. Anyone who is found guilty of such offences is liable to imprisonment.
"The RCMP will continue to pursue appropriate action to enforce federal laws pertaining to illegal business practices such as fraud and theft of telecommunications (Radiocommunication Act)," reads the release.
