MONTREAL – Educational media is a key cornerstone of a strong democracy, according to TVO CEO Lisa de Wilde.
Speaking at the Journalism Strategies conference in Montreal, de Wilde stressed that the values that public media brings to society is important enough to be funded by taxpayers.
"Some may question the value of public media in today's multi-channel, multi-platform world”, she said during a session entitled ‘Paying The Bills’. “My response is clear – educational media is part of the intellectual infrastructure of a highly functioning democracy. High quality content that informs citizens and provides a forum for public education on the big issues of the day contributes to the social cohesion of Ontario's democracy."
She added that TVO’s content – which focusses on children’s programming, documentaries and current affairs – helps to keep the public educational media organization relevant as well as distinct from private sector broadcasters.
