MONTREAL – CBC/Radio-Canada’s new home in Montreal will be right next to its old one after the public broadcaster’s board of directors approved a proposal for a new broadcast centre in that city.

The new Maison de Radio-Canada, located at the corner of René-Lévesque Blvd and Papineau Ave., will be adjacent to the existing Radio-Canada building.  Real estate developer Broccolini will construct the new building, scheduled for completion by early 2020, and CBC/Radio-Canada is to become a tenant under a 30-year lease.

"This is a major milestone in the new Maison de Radio-Canada and site revitalization project," said CBC/Radio-Canada president and CEO Hubert Lacroix, in the news release. "I'm extremely proud of the plan we're presenting. Most of all, I'm confident in the public broadcaster's future in Montreal. The new Maison de Radio-Canada will provide our employees – and creators of all disciplines – with an inspiring workplace where their talent can thrive and flourish."

Development company Groupe Mach has purchased the existing building, and the current plan calls for the landmark Radio-Canada tower to be preserved, but converted for new use.

Both transactions are still subject to overall Treasury Board approval, with a decision expected in spring 2017.
