Products on display at Commtech

COMPANIES EXHIBITING at the CommTech Trade Show had a few new things on their tables – and a lot of the old standbys, too. Here are a few of the neat things we found touring around the floor on Wednesday.

Capella Telecommunications was showing for the first time the new, tiny, Fujikura SpliceMate, which is billed as the world’s smallest and most portable fusion splicer. Weighing in at less than two pounds, the splicer is meant for field work basically anywhere and is known for its low loss splices. Also at Capella were the Fujikura BendLite cable assemblies, a flexible fibre jumper. www.capella.ca

TVC Canada was showing off the flexible, multi-celled textile innerduct system, MaxCell, which helps maximize the tight space within ductwork. The textile construction conforms to the cables placed within and helps reduce the number of conduits required for construction and allows for incremental cable deployment to match system requirements. It comes in one, two and three cell designs and the company says over 100 million feet of MaxCell innerduct has been installed world wide. www.tvccanada.com

Brockville’s Eastern Independent Telecommunications was showing off a telco class VOIP switch which is on offer for under $75,000. Its softswitch is designed to operate as an adjunct to existing Class 5 switches to provide VOIP services, IP trunking, long distance and other services. It can also be a cost-effective solution to manage media gateways. It’s equipped with voice mail, session border controller and T1 interfaces. www.eit.ca

It was announced that EastLink has selected a device provisioning system from show exhibitor Incognito Software, which the cable company will use to further deploy Internet and telephone services. Long known for its exceptional quality services, Incognito’s new Broadband Command Center provisioning solution offers reliability, ease of administration, and PacketCable support. The system currently activates customer premise equipment required for telephone services. In the future, the system will also be used to provision cable modems for Internet services. www.incognito.com

Connect Telecommunications, a diamond sponsor of the show, debuted its new exclusive line, Mainline Inc. The company boasts its Magnamax high-gain drop-in upgrades and its Systemax S-Series feature 550-870 MHZ line extenders and up to 1 GHZ system amplifier high gain drop-in upgrades. www.main-line-inc.com

Power & Telephone Supply, which is a platinum sponsor of the show, had a number of new products on display. The Outrigger media access portal from TII Network Technologies is an integrated HomePNA 3.0 and MoCA "existing home wire" networking device. Also stocked by P&T is the Sittelle Technologies wallplate intercom VOIP interface, which solves a big problem for network operators who have gone VOIP – how to install the new technology in apartment buildings without losing the intercom connection to the phone line. Finally, BTI’s Netsender wavelength division multiplexing platform, enables high bandwidth transport services and IP/Ethernet over WDM in metro access, edge, core and regional networks. www.ptsupply.ca

White Radio got into retail a bit this year with its Asoka line of plug and play data connectivity. As in plug-and-play into the electrical outlets. The Pluglink units, which are sold in part through Bell World stores, bridges Ethernet over household electrical wires, meaning no expensive new wiring or cabling to install, and no wireless and its hiccups. www.whiteradio.com
