OTT leader climbs into top five favourite TV brands

TORONTO – New research shows that American streamer Netflix has climbed into the top five favourite TV brands among English-speaking Canadians – and is number one among millennials.

A survey done in the fall by Toronto’s Solutions Research Group asked 1,000 English Canadians for the TV channels they watch most often. The group surveyed in the report “TV Brands, Who’s On Top?” were not given a list but were asked for their unaided favourites and for all Canadians aged 12+ the top 20 were:

1. CTV
2. CBC
3. Global
4. Netflix
5. HBO
6. CBS
7. CNN
8. TSN
9. Discovery
10. History
11. Sportsnet
12. ABC
13. HGTV
14. NBC
15. Fox
16. TLC
17. Food Network
18. YouTube
19. Bravo
20. Space

The orders switched up a little among men and women (pictured), however, when adjusted for age range, Netflix shot up to the top spot among the 18-34 year old age group – and YouTube hit the top 10 among that cohort:

1. Netflix
2. CBC
3. CTV
4. HBO
5. TSN
6. CBS
7. Global
8. History
9. Sportsnet
10. YouTube

One of the keys to the growing success of Netflix is its customer satisfaction levels, says the survey, which is strong and getting better. Eighty percent or more of Netflix users pronounce themselves very or somewhat satisfied with Netflix’s availability across devices, its quality of content, the value for money, ease of search, and variety of choices (see graph above).

“Netflix is becoming a daily habit for more people,” reads the report. “68% of subscribers streamed daily in fall of 2017 compared to 58% the year previous. Users are spending just over 90 minutes (1.6 hours) with Netflix daily.”
