Phone scam plagues Telus’ customers

VANCOUVER – Telus customers are the targets of a new phone scam that tries to trick them in to revealing personal information.

In a statement late Wednesday, Telus said that it has received “a significant number of customer calls” in the past 24 hours complaining about the scam.  Customers all report picking up a phone call from a 905-395-XXXX number to hear a recorded message that says: “Hello, because you are a valued Telus customer you will receive 3,000 travel dollars. To accept press 1”. Customers who press 1 are then connected to a person misrepresenting themselves as working for Telus, who tries to extract personal information from them, likely for identity theft.

Telus said that it appears as though the scammers are using an auto-dialer from outside of its network, and only using Telus’ name “because it is a widely-known brand”. Telus security is investigating the matter, and has engaged police.

The company advises anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately. It also is asking anyone who has received a call and given out personal information to contact their local police or Telus’ fraud team at 1-877-567-2062.
