CHARLOTTETOWN – The P.E.I. government has announced plans to build a high-speed fibre network.
In her recent Speech From The Throne, lieutenant-governor Antoinette Perry unveiled goals for “extensive infrastructure renewal and development”, including a backbone network designed to extend and enhance broadband services in the province.
Perry said the government has been working closely with ISPs and is "encouraged by the increased access to higher capacity services”.
“We will build on this relationship and assist our private enterprise by building a high-speed fibre network – or backbone – from tip-to-tip of our province”, she continued. “Service providers will be able to connect to this network, making it easier for them to deliver higher-speed internet to communities and homes throughout our province.”
The government's RFP (deadline December 5th) for the estimated 1,450 km network can be found here.
In the document, the backbone shall: "provide the capability of high speed networks for communities in PEI, including: extensions to Lennox and Panmure Islands, connectivity to lighthouse facilities (where appropriate), fibre redundancy within the province, and two points of redundancy travelling off the PEI (bridge and underwater cable) to access mainland network offerings (internet).
