NORTH WEST RIVER and THE SHESHATSHIU INNU FIRST NATION, NL – Over $929,000 from the Universal Broadband Fund’s (UBF) rapid response stream will help connect 582 households in North West River and the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation in Newfoundland and Labrador, the federal government announced today.
The project’s UBF funding, which was announced by Gudie Hutchings, the minister of Rural Economic Development and Yvonne Jones, MP for Labrador, represents 80% of the total project cost, according to a spokesperson for the Office of the Minister of Rural Economic Development.
The project is being completed by Big Land Networks. (Cartt.ca reached out to Big Land Networks for details about when the project will be completed but did not hear back by deadline. We will update this story if we hear more.)
“Big Land Networks is excited to announce the expansion of bigLink Internet, bringing fibre optic Internet to the residents of Sheshatshiu and North West River,” said David Hall, the company’s president, in a government press release announcing the funding.
“bigLink Internet is a brand new fiber-to-the-home service, offering packages with speeds up to 500 Mbps! We would like to thank the Innu Development Limited Partnership and the Government of Canada for the opportunity to provide underserved Labrador communities with high-speed Internet services and to bridge the digital divide by expanding our fibre networks into even more rural areas.”
