The previously announced new scripted comedy series One Baby, Please! from Canadian production company Kate Green Productions is set to premiere on OUTtv on Monday, Nov. 2, with new episodes dropping weekly through Nov. 16.
Comprising six 12-minute episodes, the series will stream across Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, including through OUTtv’s channels on Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube TV and Roku, as well as OUTflix in the U.K. and Ireland.
Created by and starring Karim Ahmed Adam and Adrian Neblett, One Baby, Please! is a family comedy that looks at what happens when two husbands, two immigrant families, a sperm test, an egg donor and a spiritual surrogacy retreat all collide.
Made in Vancouver, the series follows Omar (Adam), a laidback Egyptian-Canadian, and his uptight Barbadian-Canadian husband, Dieon (Neblett), “as they battle the fertility system, their friends and — perhaps most dangerously — their very involved families in their quest to have a ‘gayby’,” reads a description in a press release.
“When we started this, I didn’t know a single show where a queer Arab man got to be the romantic lead, let alone the guy trying to become a father,” Adam said in the press release. “For five years, Adrian and I held onto this story because we knew someone out there needed to see it. Now they finally can, and I hope they laugh as hard as they feel seen.”
“One Baby, Please! is about two guys who just want to have a baby — and discover that absolutely everyone has an opinion about how they should do it,” said producer Kate Green. “It’s a comedy about the chaos of making a family, but underneath all the ridiculousness is a very universal story about love, identity, culture and belonging.”
Executive producer Anthony Q. Farrell — BAFTA winner, Emmy nominee, The Office writer and recipient of the 2022 WGC Showrunner of the Year award — also directs alongside Green and Polly Pierce. The creative team also includes Teresa Pavlinek — writer and consulting producer on Schitt’s Creek — who served as story editor on the series.
One Baby, Please! was financed by OUTtv, the Independent Production Fund, and the Bell Fund. Series development was supported by Creative BC’s Project Development Fund. The series was developed with the input of 10 research partners, including Olive Fertility Centre and NYC Gay Dad, “helping ground the comedy in the very real experiences of LGBTQ+ people navigating fertility, surrogacy and parenthood,” the press release said.
“With its mix of LGBTQ+ storytelling, immigrant family dynamics and fertility comedy, One Baby, Please! is designed to reach audiences well beyond the traditional LGBTQ+ comedy space — connecting with parenting, entertainment, Arab and Caribbean diaspora audiences around the world,” the release added.
