Ottawa region running out of numbers, too

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – The available phone numbers have run low in many regions of the country in past years so it’s no surprise the same thing is happening in the 613.

The CRTC today initiated a public process to handle the telephone number shortage affecting the area code 613 region, which may result in the introduction of a new area code, it said today.

According to the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA), area code 613 is expected to run out of telephone numbers by May 2012.

With this public notice (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/eng/notices/2007/pt2007-18.htm), the Commission is establishing a Relief Planning Committee (RPC) to evaluate and present various relief options. The CRTC’s role will be to approve a solution.

The overview of the relief process includes:

* With the issuance of this public notice, the CRTC is encouraging interested parties to participate in the planning process.
* Anyone interested in participating in the process must register with the CRTC by October 26, 2007.
* Once registered with the CRTC, interested parties will then be able to provide comments during the planning process.
* Details of the process are stated in the public notice.
* Any person wishing to examine the documents of the RPC may do so by accessing the CNA website at www.cnac.ca or by phone, at 613-563-7242.

A final decision on the area code 613 relief plan is expected in 2008.
