Original content powers earnings, subscriptions at Netflix

LOS GATOS, CA – Netflix credited the success of its original series behind third quarter increases in its subscriber numbers and revenue for the period ended September 30, 2013.

Revenues were $1.1 billion, up from $905 million during the same quarter in 2012.  Netflix also recorded net profits of $32 million, a marked increase over the $8 million reported for the same period a year earlier.

In its letter to shareholders Monday, the company reported that subscribers in the U.S. increased by 1.3 million this quarter to 31 million, an 11% increase over the same time last year.  After launches in the Nordics and the Netherlands over the last year, in addition to growth in existing markets, international subscribers increased by 605,000 during this period to a total of 9.18 million (a breakdown of the number of Canadian Netflix subscribers was not specified in the results).

Netflix is now available in 41 countries and said it plans to enter other, yet-to-be identified international markets.

“While our original series get most of the headlines, a bigger percentage of overall Netflix viewing is generated by our exclusive complete season-after series”, wrote CEO Reed Hastings, noting the launches of new seasons of The New Girl, The Walking Dead, Scandal, Breaking Bad, Revolution and Pretty Little Liars during the quarter.

Hastings also said that Netflix will expand into original documentaries, a category that does well on the service, and that the company expects to double its investment in original content in 2014.
