MISSISSAUGA – The Ontario government has awarded the contracts to bring high-speed internet to two more counties under its Rural Broadband Partnership Program.
Everus Communications, formerly known as High-Speed FX Communications, will design, equip, build and maintain the wireless broadband network in Grey and Dufferin counties, while Crossover Distribution Corp. has been chosen as the main technology partner to supply the wireless infrastructure and subscriber equipment to allow businesses and residences to connect to these networks.
In turn, Everus has selected Trango Broadband’s high-capacity, licensed and license-exempt fixed broadband wireless technologies to provide service to the 3,000 under-served subscribers throughout both counties.
The Dufferin project will address a significant lack of high speed internet service experienced by more than one-third of residents and approximately fifty percent of the county’s small businesses.
The County of Grey has identified 11 areas that are currently not served by existing high speed internet providers. The new service will be available to most of these regions by the end of September 2008.
“Broadband connectivity is the new utility, like telephone and electricity, and we are committed to giving rural residents and businesses the service they need to participate in social and economic life equally with their urban counterparts,” said David de Weerdt, Everus’ CEO, in a statement.
“We take great pride in being able to do our part in helping to provide equal access to the internet for Canadians regardless of where they live,” said Darin Gibbons, VP of Sales & Marketing at Crossover.
The government’s $10 million Rural Connections Program, announced last year, is aimed at providing a modern, efficient and reliable telecommunications system in rural communities.
