OTTAWA – More and more Canadians now share content online, and streaming video is now the norm, not the exception, according to two new reports from Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

With TV content, movies, sports, news and YouTube videos available anytime, anywhere from any device, it’s no wonder streaming video has become one of the top Internet activities among Anglophones, says the Streaming Video: Analysis of the English-Language Market report.  The MTM draws on this popularity to outline the trends of streaming video and TV while examining the overall impact on traditional TV viewing.

Highlights from the report include:

– Online video is becoming ubiquitous, with four-fifths of Anglophones watching some type of video on the Internet;

– Online TV continues to grow in popularity, with half of Anglophones watching TV online; and

– YouTube continues to be the most popular online video site, and watching news online saw a 50% jump over the past year.

With the rise of social media and the prominence of Internet-connected devices, sharing content online is easier than it has ever been. The Who and Where?  How Canadians Share Content Online report reviews who is sharing this content and where they are sharing it.

Highlights from that report are:

– Canadians love to share content.  Whether it’s sharing links to breaking news or the latest videos on YouTube, half of Canadians report doing so;

– When it comes to platforms, social networks are the most popular way to share links to news article and videos. One-third of Canadians have shared on a social network in the past month; and

– Content-sharing Canadians are most likely to be Millennials and have a higher household income of $150K or more.
