TORONTO — Mediapro Canada announced today OneSoccer, its dedicated soccer streaming service, will undertake its largest-ever production of a live sports event in Canada tomorrow for the Canadian men’s national soccer team’s FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Mexico at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
OneSoccer is producing coverage of the match, part of the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qatar Qualifiers, for broadcasters in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, as well as multiple rights-holders worldwide.
According to a press release, nearly 100 technical and production crew members, working across three outside broadcast trucks at the stadium, will produce live coverage of the match using a total of 28 cameras, including two Super Slo-Mo cameras.
In Canada, the match will air live on OneSoccer (available as a linear channel on Telus Optik TV channel 980), as well as through the OneSoccer app and on the fuboTV Canada streaming platform. Rogers Sports and Media’s Sportsnet and Bell Media’s French-language broadcaster RDS will also broadcast the match live.
OneSoccer’s on-site studio panel will be hosted by award-winning broadcaster Andi Petrillo, alongside experts Oliver Platt and Kristian Jack. Play-by-play commentary will be provided by Gareth Wheeler and former Canadian international Terry Dunfield (English) and Matt Cullen (French).
“OneSoccer will also provide technical and production services for multiple networks in the USA and Mexico in response to heightened interest in the match south of the border — as those three national teams battle for a top-three spot in the standings and an automatic berth in the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” the press release reads.
The Canadian men’s match against Mexico tomorrow follows their 1-0 win over Costa Rica in last Friday’s qualifier, where almost 49,000 fans filled the stands in Edmonton, the hometown of national team star Alphonso Davies (pictured above, preparing to take a corner kick during the match).
“It has been exciting and challenging to work with my team in Canada and with my Mediapro colleagues around the world to produce the biggest soccer match in Canada this year — coordinating a 28-camera shoot, multiple live feeds, nearly two hours of pre- and post-game and half-time shows, a live on-site studio panel and sub-zero temperatures as we endeavour to deliver the best-possible broadcast to all our rights holders, in Canada and abroad,” said Alba Campabadal, vice-president of OneSoccer and head of production, in the press release.
“OneSoccer has been a driving force behind the explosive growth in popularity of the Canadian game over the past two years, providing extensive coverage of the national teams, the Canadian Premier League and other Canadian tournaments, to the extent that fully 85% of the coverage on the channel is Canadian content,” said Oscar López, CEO of Mediapro Canada.
