Omelus moves to ROBTv

TORONTO – Mike Omelus, general news director at Broadcast News, is moving down the street, King St. in Toronto, to be exact, to ROBTv, reports the RTNDA Update.

Omelus (left, from RTNDA Update) has accepted a position as executive producer at the financial news specialty channel. He will leave BN at the end of the month.

He joined BN in 1984 as a reporter/editor in Toronto and transferred to Ottawa in 1986 and Washington in 1991 before returning to BN’s head office as General News Director three years later.

“In 12 years as the head of BN’s news operations, Mike has overseen a news report that won 18 awards from RTNDA," said Wayne Waldroff, vice-president and general manager of Broadcast News. "He has steered BN through a period of intense and constant change in the broadcasting industry. Mike was instrumental in BN’s development of Hotwire, a value-added service targeted beyond newsrooms to announcers, TV producers and station managers. And he played an essential role in countless internal initiatives. I thank him for all his efforts for BN over the years, and wish him well in his new endeavour.”

Terry Scott will take on the role of acting general news director in addition to his regular duties as BN general executive. “Terry has worked for BN since 1990, first as supervising editor in Toronto and, since 1994, as general executive responsible for client liaison. He has also held a number of leadership positions with the RTNDA and has served as that organization’s President since 2003," added Waldroff. To support Scott, news editor Ellen Huebert and audio supervisor Rose Kingdon have agreed to temporarily take on additional newsroom responsibilities.

A permanent general news director will be appointed in due course, probably after the BN regional meetings later this spring, says the RTNDA Update.
