Olympic audiences continue to soar


VANCOUVER – As Canada continues in its quest to ‘own the podium’, audiences for the 2010 Winter Games continue to soar.

Sidney Crosby’s game-winning shootout goal during Canada’s match against Switzerland on Thursday was watched by an incredible 12 million viewers, according to preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada. The game was watched on average by 6.8 million viewers, with 769,000 viewers on V/CPAC and RDS.

Other audience highlights from the weekend include:

– Christine Nesbitt’s gold medal performance in Ladies’ 1000 m speed skating was watched by 1.5 million viewers, while 4.1 million viewers watched her receive her medal during the victory ceremony on CTV and RDS;

– An average of 2.2 million viewers watched Jon Montgomery triumph in skeleton, peaking at 4.6 million as he was announced the gold medal winner on Friday.  An average of 3.88 million viewers on CTV and RDS watched as he received Canada’s fourth gold medal;

– Saturday was a big day for TSN, with seven events averaging more than 1.25 million viewers.  In short track speed skating, the men’s 1000m semifinals (1.73M) and finals (1.99M), along with the Ladies’ 1500m semifinals (1.99M) and finals (1.92M), ranked as the top 4 events on TSN, Games-to-date, and among the most-watched broadcasts on TSN this broadcast year;

– V recorded its largest audience yet and its first million-plus audience since the Games began with 1.049 million viewers for the Ladies’ short track speed skating 1500m finals;

– APTN saw its largest audience yet at the Games with 68,000 viewers for Sweden/USA Men’s curling, four times its prime time average audience for Games coverage;

– By the end of Day 9, Games-dedicated websites CTVOlympics. ca and RDSolympiques.ca had received 100 million page views.
