O'Brian is an independent film producer whose movies have won 19 Genie Awards, including the films, The Grey Fox and My American Cousin. In 2015, he produced Survivors Rowe, a film that documents the stories of three Indigenous men who were abused by Anglican minister Ralph Rowe.

He is a founding board member and former executive director of the Canadian Film Centre. In 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2013 he was honoured with the Directors Guild of Canada's Honourary Life Member Award.

"I'm excited about TVO's future and the momentum we are building," said O'Brian, in the press release. "TVO has made tremendous gains in its transformation to an innovative educational media organization focused on digital learning and citizen engagement. It's an honour to be a part of this dynamic organization."

"TVO is fortunate to have a Chair who is so committed to serving the needs of Ontarians," added Lisa de Wilde, TVO’s CEO. "Peter's work as Chair has been instrumental in TVO's transformation as we reinvent the way we learn in the 21st century and how we participate as citizens in our democracy."
