RENO, Nev. – Canadian cable pioneer Peter Burchardt died January 29th at his home in Nevada of complications due to Alzheimers. He was 71.
Born in Germany, Burchardt emigrated to B.C. in the 1960s and eventually found his way to Delta Cable, working for founder Stan Thomas.
During his time at Delta Cable, Burchardt and others were instrumental in helping to identify the need for, and assist with, the design of numerous leading-edge technology solutions including the standby power supplies that eventually launched Alpha Technologies, said John Thomas, who ran his father’s company after Stan retired.
“Peter will always be remembered as an energetic innovator and creative technician. In his own business (Current Communications) he worked on behalf of various cable companies, throughout B.C. in particular, as a consultant and design engineer specializing in microwave and distant signal reception,” added Thomas.
Burchardt later moved to Denver and worked for EchoStar as an RF engineer until his retirement in 1999.
He is survived by his wife Reinhild, daughter Connie, son Craig and a number of grandchildren.
