INUVIK, NWT — Northwestel said today it has officially launched its unlimited fibre internet service in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, with residential and business customers now able to order the service which offers speeds up to 250 Mbps.
Northwestel announced its intention last year to extend its fibre-to-the-home service to Inuvik (pop. 3,300), which is the company’s second FTTH community in the Northwest Territories, following Hay River. Both projects were funded entirely by Northwestel, the company says in a press release.
The company’s new residential fibre internet plans will deliver up to 16x faster Internet than previously offered by Northwestel, at the same rates available in Yellowknife, says the release. Customers are now able to add unlimited data to their plan.
It competes in the town with local carrier New North Networks, which launched unlimited data on its broadband packages last year.
“It is beyond exciting to introduce fibre internet and unlimited data to Inuvik customers. We appreciate the community’s patience with the extra measures we have put in place to complete installation during this special time,” says Northwestel president Curtis Shaw, in the release. “I want to recognize our northern employees for their tireless efforts to make Inuvik the first Canadian fibre-to-the-home community in the Arctic Circle.”
To ensure customer and employee safety during the Covid-19 situation, Northwestel is implementing special procedures for Fibre Internet service requests in Inuvik. First, only single-dwelling homes and businesses will be completed in the first phase of the project, due to the more complex installation required for multi-dwelling homes such as apartment buildings which will be done at a later phase.
In addition, Northwestel is encouraging customers to go online to request fibre internet service at nwtel.ca, in order to minimize congestion in the company’s northern call centres. A home visit is required to install service, and Northwestel technicians will observe proper health and safety procedures in the customer’s home, the company says.
Inuvik residential customers can take advantage of a special introductory 25% discount on new broadband plans for the first four months of service.
