WHITEHORSE – This week, Northwestel submitted tariff applications to the CRTC for new business and residential Internet packages with an unlimited data option.
If approved, Internet plans with unlimited data would be available in Whitehorse YT, Carcross YT, Fort Nelson BC, Yellowknife NWT, Hay River NWT, Norman Wells NWT and Fort Smith NWT.
The company says it plans on offering unlimited data on three residential Internet plans: Internet 250, Internet 125 and Internet 50. Customers will be able to choose unlimited data on the top two standard Internet plans for $10 more per month.
Its Internet 250 plan (250 Mbps download speed/15 upload) with a 750 GB monthly data cap at $239.95 would become unlimited for $249.95/mo.; Internet 125 (125 down/12.5 Mbps up) with 600 GB of monthly data for $189.95 would become unlimited for $199.95/mo.; and Internet 50 (50/4) with 300 GB of monthly data would go from $110.95 to $160.95/mo. with unlimited data.
Northwestel’s announcement reminded customers the proposed unlimited Internet plans are subject to CRTC approval and will not be available to order prior to November 2, 2020. At that time customers will be able to make requests online or through our customer service channels.
The Bell-owned company, due to its dominant position in the north, remains heavily regulated by the Commission and must seek approval for changes such as these.
Northwestel also said it plans to introduce unlimited Internet to every NWT and Yukon community within three years as part of its Every Community Project.
