Northwestel launches unlimited FTTH service in Behchokǫ̀

BEHCHOKǪ̀, NT — Northwestel announced today the launch of full-fibre Internet service with unlimited data to homes and businesses in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories.

With the launch, the home Internet speeds now available in Behchokǫ̀ have increased from 15 Mbps to 250 Mbps for downloads, which far surpasses the CRTC’s universal service objective of 50 Mbps, says a Northwestel press release.

“Alongside faster unlimited Internet, Behchokǫ̀ now has Internet rates that match those available in major Northern centres,” the release says.

Northwestel’s unlimited Internet plans range in price from $161 per month for its Internet 50 service with download speeds up to 50 Mbps to $250 per month for its Internet 250 plan with download speeds up to 250 Mbps, according to information on the company’s website.

Behchokǫ̀ residents can also access live HD TV content through the new Northwestel TV Plus service, which allows customers to watch on TVs, phones or tablets anytime, starting at $25 per month, the press release says.

“Northwestel is proud to be opening up a new level of connectivity to Behchokǫ̀ with Fibre-to-the-home,” said Northwestel president Curtis Shaw, in the release.

“We’re using the same technology used in cities like Edmonton and Toronto and bringing it home to our north. We know these improvements will help contribute to a thriving community for decades to come.”

Behchokǫ̀’s fibre upgrades are part of Northwestel’s Every Community project, a three-year plan to bring high-speed unlimited Internet to 10,000 homes in the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

“The Every Community project is the company’s largest-ever construction initiative, funded by Northwestel’s own significant investments and $62 million in funding from the CRTC Broadband Fund,” explains the release.

Behchokǫ̀ is now the sixth community in Canada’s north to be connected to Northwestel’s high-speed FTTH service, following launches in Hay River, Inuvik, Dawson City, Watson Lake, and Upper Liard.
