WHITEHORSE, YT – Bell subsidiary Northwestel announced last week it has launched fibre internet in the Yukon communities of Mayo and Stewart Crossing, located on the traditional territory of the Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation.
In addition to connecting fibre directly to homes, Northwestel has extended its fibre network from Stewart Crossing to Mayo, a press release explains.
Residents in these communities can now order “the north’s fastest home Internet”, with download speeds up to 500 Mbps and unlimited monthly data, the release says. For business customers, Northwestel’s new fibre internet service offers download speeds up to 550 Mbps.
Furthermore, customers in these communities now have access to live and on-demand content through the new Northwestel TV Plus service, the release adds.
“We’re excited that the very same technology that powers places like downtown Vancouver now powers Mayo and Stewart Crossing,” Curtis Shaw, president of Northwestel, said in the release. “We’re also grateful to the community for hosting our crews as we completed the work needed to bring fast, unlimited fibre Internet to residents.”
The fibre upgrades in Mayo and Stewart Crossing are part of Northwestel’s Every Community Project, a three-year project to bring high-speed unlimited internet to 10,000 homes across Yukon and the Northwest Territories. These improvements are being funded by the CRTC Broadband Fund as well as Northwestel’s own significant investments, the release says.
Northwestel says it plans by the end of this year to upgrade the Yukon communities of Carcross and Tagish to its new fibre-to-the-home technology and live TV service.
