Northwestel files new tariffs and winback discounts for proposed 1 Gbps residential internet plans

Far north telecom Northwestel has filed with the CRTC revised tariffs and proposed winback discounts to introduce residential 1 Gbps internet packages to its customers.

The two plans — Cable Internet 1 Gbps Unlimited and FTTP Internet 1 Gbps Unlimited — are the first residential 1 Gbps internet packages to be offered by Northwestel. The FTTP plan offers symmetrical download and upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps, while the cable plan offers 1 Gbps download and 30 Mbps upload speeds, according to Northwestel’s tariff filing made public on the CRTC’s website on Monday.

Northwestel said it is introducing each plan for a monthly price of $219.95, and it is proposing winback packages for each with a discounted price of $169.95 per month. The winback packages would be available to eligible customers who have previously subscribed to a Northwestel residential internet package for at least one month, and who have been disconnected from that service for at least the same amount of time and have been subscribed to another service provider’s internet service in Northwestel’s operating territory during that period.

The CRTC has previously approved winback discounts for Northwestel’s internet plans, which until now had offered 700 Mbps as their fastest download speed.

The regular and discounted monthly prices for its new 1 Gbps internet packages match Northwestel’s existing prices for its 700 Mbps packages, according to the revised and existing tariff pages submitted with Northwestel’s Tariff Notice 1255 filing.

In a statement emailed to Cartt on Wednesday, a Northwestel spokesperson confirmed the telecom launched 1 Gbps full-fibre internet service on June 16 to Atlin, B.C. — “a community that was never connected to fast, unlimited terrestrial internet before,” according to the statement.

“This is the first time fibre-to-the-home 1 Gbps service has been made available in northern Canada. We are upgrading our network across Yukon and NWT to roll out 1 Gbps to all fibre-served northerners. The next community to receive this upgrade will be Granger in Whitehorse, Yukon,” the spokesperson said.
