Northwestel employees assist with super-sized move

IQALUIT – Northwestel employees could be featured on an episode of History Channel’s Mega Movers after helping move two 100 tonne diesel generators from the sea lift at the beach in Iqaluit through town to the Power Corp's generation station.

Robert Steele, a Northwestel cable splicer in Iqaluit, snapped the shot below.

"We, Northwestel, worked with Power Corp's technicians, by-law, RCMP and a local heavy equipment company to lay-out the route and lift our copper and fibre optic lines to allow safe passage”, he said.  “Wartsila (a moving company that has been featured on Mega Movers), brought in a 300 tonne 'crawler', along with other heavy duty equipment. The entire move was videoed for TV."

Created for the History Channel, Mega Movers features large moves, including the preparations and inside problems that can occur when trying to relocate the likes of historical buildings, famous mansions, and apartment houses to new sites miles away.
