IQALUIT – The remote island community of Igloolik is taking a leap forward in telecommunications with the arrival of wireless cellular service for the first time in history.
“Igloolik residents will be able to enjoy the convenience of the cellular wireless experience for the first time, and Northwestel is pleased to be able to provide it,” said Bertrand Poisson, General Manager, Nunavut at Northwestel. “Our cellular network will be active in time for the holiday season, making a prepaid phone and credits the ultimate in convenience and the perfect gift in Igloolik this year.”
Prepaid wireless is a service that allows customers to buy a new cellular phone and purchase service in $10, $20, $50, or $100 denominations as needed. As phone calls or text messages are sent, the dollar balance is reduced accordingly. When the balance runs out, customers simply purchase more credit says Northwestel.
In addition to providing residents with low-cost phones, no credit checks or contracts, Northwestel’s Prepaid Wireless also offers free calling features such as voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, and caller ID, where available.
Updated equipment and a new cellular tower were installed by the Northwestel team over the last five months in preparation for the launch of the new wireless service. In partnership with the local Northern Store, a Northwestel retail representative will be in the community from December 17-19 to answer questions about wireless service, handsets and plans.
