Northwestel announces $3M full-fibre upgrade for Granger bringing 1 Gbps speeds

Northwestel announced Monday it is investing $3 million to upgrade its infrastructure in the Whitehorse neighbourhood of Granger to full fibre-to-the-home internet.

Fully funded by Northwestel, construction on this project is set to begin this summer. Once completed, Granger residents will have access to faster, more reliable internet with download and upload speeds up to 1 Gbps, Northwestel said in a press release.

The northern telecom is hosting a community meeting at Elijah Smith Elementary School on May 7 starting at 6:30 p.m. local time to share more details about the project.

“Using the latest innovations and minimally invasive installation techniques like micro-trenching and directional drilling, Northwestel will install fibre directly to customers’ homes. The cost of installation, a value estimated at $1,500 for this significant technology upgrade, will be covered by Northwestel this year,” Northwestel’s press release said.

To connect to the new technology, Granger homeowners must complete an online agreement form at www.nwtel.ca/granger.

“We hope the residents of Granger join us on May 7th so we can share more details about how this project will bring the North’s fastest Internet and best network technology to their homes, up to 1 Gbps speeds. Our local team will be there to answer any questions and get people signed up,” said Curtis Shaw, president of Northwestel, in the company’s announcement.

Northwestel is bringing 1 Gbps download speeds to fibre-powered communities across northern Canada, the telecom said, adding the first communities and neighbourhoods to receive this speed improvement will be Atlin, B.C., and Granger, Yukon.
