NFB signs distribution deal with Tubi

TORONTO — The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) announced today it has signed a new distribution deal with Tubi, Fox Corporation’s free ad-supported video-on-demand platform, that will see NFB films featured on Tubi in Canada, the U.S. and Australia.

“The NFB is an Oscar-winning source of powerful storytelling, and Tubi is kicking off an ongoing relationship with the NFB with 29 titles, available now for free — films that showcase the NFB’s strength in award-winning, socially engaged documentaries,” reads a press release.

Some of the NFB films currently available on Tubi include: Angry Inuk, a multi-award-winning 2016 documentary by Inuk filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril that challenges the anti-sealing movement; The Apology, Tiffany Hsiung’s award-winning 2016 exploration of the lives of three former “comfort women” who were kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II; and A Better Man, a 2017 documentary by Attiya Khan and Lawrence Jackman that looks at how healing can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their domestic abuse.

Other documentaries available now on Tubi include the late John Kastner’s final film with the NFB, Out of Mind, Out of Sight (2014), Montreal filmmaker Félix Rose’s The Rose Family (2020), and Charles Officer’s Unarmed Verses (2016).

“This is just the start for the NFB on Tubi, with films coming throughout the year,” the press release says.

“The National Film Board of Canada is thrilled to have our films on Tubi’s platform,” said Nathalie Bourdon, the NFB’s director of distribution and market development, in the release. “This partnership, which perfectly aligns with our digital strategy, will allow us to grow our audience.”

“We’re so pleased to partner with the National Film Board of Canada to bring their premium, thought-provoking and award-winning slate of documentaries to our service for viewers to discover and enjoy,” said Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s chief content officer.
